All about the competition – some facts and figures*
Applications for UK university places last year totalled 615,000 – an all time high.
There was a rise of 12.5% in applications to Oxford and 8% to Cambridge, while Birmingham City University saw applications soar by 37%, and by 32% at Bedfordshire. Manchester topped the league table for the sheer number of applications, with 56,000 students competing for just 7,500 places, while LSE proved the most competitively sought-after institution, with more than 14 applicants per place.
At course level the picture can seem even more daunting. English, particularly, is a very popular degree at UK universities across the nation. Last year alone there were 1,674 applicants for only 62 places to read this subject at Bristol, most with at least 3 straight A’s predicted at A level.
Experts are expecting more applications this year than ever before.
With competition for places fiercer than ever, and a profusion of candidates with near identical top grades, the UCAS personal statement is increasingly seen as the most important element of your application – your one opportunity to stand out from that pile on the admissions tutor’s desk.
Each of our UCAS personal statements is designed to address the four concerns every admissions tutor has:
- What are your motivations for studying this course?
- How are you qualified (academically and otherwise) for this course?
- What sets you apart from other equally qualified candidates?
- How will you personally benefit from taking this course?
Few universities these days offer interviews, which traditionally allowed bright students to address these essential points, and exhibit their enthusiasm and academic prowess. The best way to maximise your chances of securing that place on your preferred course is to present yourself through a professional, comprehensive and impressive UCAS personal statement.
